Quality

The thanksgiving break is here and its been a welcome relief. After the frenetic activity of two days slept blissfully for the last two days after having decided to completely turn off the academic worries. Its now time to get back to a bit of work. One of my professors ran into me and seeing my haggardly state asked me with a wry grin as to how grad life was treating me. All I could think of telling him at that point was that its been fine so far. Honestly, I would tend to believe that while its been a great experience in more ways than one, academically I think we tend to hit a ceiling sooner or later.

In many ways it brought me to a discussion I had with nag where we were trying to analyze the most important ingredient to success. Does it boil down to the number of degrees we possess or the amount of money we make or other such quantifiable things. It was then that we realised that answers are always difficult if the question isnt clear enough. I think the most important thing is the definition of success and it brought me to a keynote speech by one of our alumni which was as stirring as thought provoking. Most of it was exhorting compelling rhetoric, but one line caught my eye while going through it

It is not our success that defines us, but how
we define success.

At age 4, success is not peeing in your pants.

At age 16, success is having a driver's licence.

At age 20, success is having sex.

At age 35, success is having a good job.

At age 55, success is having money.

At age 70, success is having sex.

At age 80, success is having a driver's licence.

At age 90, success is not peeing in your pants.

In our lives, both our professional and personal lives, success is a far more pliant concept. Success is not determined by the traditional measures of recognition and reward, but in the lessons we learn, even in failure, and the lives we touch along the way.

Good health, of course, is a blessing, but one that is aided by disciplined living and a healthy respect for the amount of abuse our bodies can take before they rebel. If you are not healthy, there is not
much you can do for others.

I guess that the one conclusion I can come to is that the thing that drives quality is a constant striving for excellence in the aspects of life that we hold dear. I guess the other important thing is to know what you really want in life and in which order of priority. One of my friends once commented on how sometimes people are so blind to success. Thinking back of it have to agree that in many way its very true.:)

Well I guess its time to end this one here. Over and out folks.....
