Attitudes
This thought has been buzzing around in my head for some time now. It struck me while reading one of my earlier writings again. This has mainly got to do with the new order that we have in society and the kind of attitudes that are prevalent in the world. We live in an age where we pretty much do the things we want to, when we want to and how we want to. It goes under the name of personal liberty and independence amongst other things. The generation next men and women of the world believe in having a cool happening killer attitude.
The newer generation to which we belong to believes that we deserve to have the kind of luxuries we now possess. It might just be because I am right now in a place where people seem to be swayed by appearances more than content. This phenomenon is not just restricted to products. However, I have a feeling that the place I came from is not too far away from mirroring conditions here.
What really got me thinking was whether the output we produce, the products of our work and the quality of that product is really commensurate to the resources we are consuming right now. This isnt really about just a few individuals. Its about society as a whole. We of all the people should be aware that resources arent infinite. Does the advancements in science and technology really compensate for the resources we are eating up as a society. Some might ask as to why I am singling out science and technology. I asked myself the same question. After all is it to say that science and technology is the only thing that is important. Do I mean to say that advancements in health, commerce and arts arent as important. Well, they are as important if not more. However, it is the progress in science that will eventually determine whether we are able to renew our resources at a faster rate than that occurs by natural means. Is the commitment to pure sciences research indicative of this importance or is it meagre to say the least.
Well perhaps its not my station to comment on this and then perhaps it is. Is it just me who believes that we should for once perhaps look beyond ourselves and have a frank appraisal of whether our contribution to the world justifies the resources we consume. We have been given a world which is full of conveniences unparalleled. The fact that a good percentage of the human population is never able to avail of the basic amenities let alone conveniences is a another matter altogether. Will we leave behind a world that will be cummulatively richer or will it be poorer for our presence. This is not even considering the social mess that is around us. That for me is a scary thought.
Its time to end this one here folks.. over and out.
